There are countless reasons to visit Portland, and our relationship with our environment is at or near the top of the list. Few cities enjoy the same balance of big-city conveniences and unspoiled natural beauty that we do. No matter where you are in the metro, you’re simply never far from great outdoor activities in Portland.
Looking to enjoy the environment while you’re here? You’re in the right place. Read on for some tips on how to get into the outdoors.
Take a Walking Tour
Portland is rated as one of the most walkable cities in the country, thanks to having plenty of walking, hiking and jogging paths, park space, and pedestrian-friendly amenities. You can either pick a direction and strike out in search of adventure on your own, or take one of the many Portland walking tours offered by various urban exploration companies. You can opt for a haunted downtown ghost tour, craft brewery tour, or even a donut tour!
Embark on a Nature Hike
The impressive amount of green space Portland enjoys means that an energizing nature walk is always close by. At 5,200 acres, Forest Park in Northwest Portland is one of the city’s most popular spots to head out for a hike. This absolutely gorgeous space has miles of hiking trails ranging in challenge from leisurely strolls to treks that somehow seem to be uphill both ways. The park is also dotted with fascinating structures and wildlife areas. Bring your camera!
Stop by Waterfront Park
This tranquil treasure winds along the western bank of the Willamette River, affording stunning views, lots of attractions, and a robust events calendar. When you drop by Waterfront Park, don’t miss visiting the Battleship Oregon Memorial, Salmon Street Springs Fountain, Oregon Maritime Museum, Japanese-American Historical Plaza, and Friendship Circle. It’s also the setting of the famous Waterfront Blues Festival, a celebration of Americana music.
Shop the Portland Saturday Market
Portland’s famous Saturday Market is more than just a farmers market, arts-and-crafts fair, and foodie magnet. It’s the single largest continually operating open-air bazaar in the nation. Chances are, if it exists, you’ll find it here. If you plan to visit, expect the unexpected; there are undeniable treasures around every corner, and they seem to go on forever. It would be impossible to sum it up here, so you owe it to yourself to go.
Kayak the Willamette River
The Willamette river is, in many ways, the heart of Portland. It winds right through the center of our fair city and offers recreation and beauty in equal measure. You’ll almost always see kayakers, canoers, and boaters navigating its serene surface and enjoying the mild weather. Why not join them? Taking a trek down the river is a fantastic way to soak up some sunshine, get some exercise, and enjoy the outdoors. Here’s a great place to start.
